Napoleon’s diamond engagement ring


The 18 mm diameter pure gold ring set with a diamond and a pear-shaped sapphire.

The ring was given to his wife Josephine by Napoleon in 1796, whick was auctioned on March 24 in Fontainebleau located in the suburbs of Paris, 730,000 euros was final transaction price, 50 times as much as the original valuation.

The engagement ring was designed in the 18th century, called “You and I,” inlaid with a diamond and a pear-shaped sapphire.

In February 1796, 27-year-old Napoleon announced engagement with Josephine who six years older than him. A month later, they held a wedding. Shortly after their marriage, Napoleon returned to the Italian front.
